Yuletide Day 5
Today we’re shining the spotlight on one of our most-loved appetizers: Sausage Rolls.
Did you know we make them in-house from start to finish? Our rolls are filled with house-seasoned pork, in a style similar to Irish sausage, then hand-rolled in puff pastry and baked until flaky and golden. They’re perfect for sharing, easy to pass around the table, and even better dipped in our onion gravy, which has become one of those “I need more of that” items for many of our guests.
When Adrian and I traveled to Ireland last year, we naturally had to sample a few sausage rolls. They often arrived as long, uncut rolls with a tangy tomato-style relish (or even ketchup) on the side. Rustic and wonderful, perfect for on the go, but not nearly as easy to share as our bite-sized version.
Sausage rolls from Keogh’s Cafe in Dublin, including a black pudding and apple version.
Sausage roll with a sweet tomato-ey sauce, almost berry like! Random stop after wandering along St. James Street in Dublin.
Inspired by that tomatoey side, we started serving our rolls with the famous Ballymaloe tomato relish out of Co. Cork. When it became too costly and difficult to get, we began making our own. It turned out so well that it now appears in a few spots on the menu, including our Winter Florentine Benedict and our Toastie. If that sounds like your kind of thing, just ask your server to add a side of our house tomato relish to your order.
However you choose to enjoy them, they are perfect with a pint, a whiskey from your bingo card, or simply a reason to share some time with good company.
Sláinte!
