Yuletide Day 8
✨ Happy December 8th! ✨
We love this time of year, when kindness feels a little easier and small joys seem to shine a little brighter. Throughout December, we will send a daily Yuletide surprise straight to your inbox or by text. We are keeping these off social media this year so they remain special for those of you who have chosen to be on this list. Thank you for letting us be a small part of your December.
Here is to a beautiful December filled with good company and good cheer. Sláinte.
✨DAY 8: Too many ideas✨
Tiny Tadhg has been back at Saints & Scholars for a full week now, and it seems he has spent most of it conducting what he calls “important observational work.”
One night he was halfway up the pendant light above the bar with a bird’s eye view of the pub, hanging there like a very small, very proud mountaineer. Another morning we found him nestled between bottles of The Irishman on the whiskey shelf, clutching one as if he had just discovered a long-lost relative. Midweek he curled up in a stocking hanging from the fireplace, candy cane in hand, clearly testing how comfortable the accommodations might be for a cold winter’s night.
One curious day we found him dangling upside down from a high shelf, holding a scarf with a candy cane hanging from the end like fishing bait. What exactly he was trying to catch is unclear, but he looked very amused with himself.
Then, the night our cocoa cart made its grand debut, he tucked himself behind the big WE WISH YOU A MERRY CHRISTMAS sign, convinced he had found the perfect hiding spot, I am sure. It did not work as well as he thought since he is dressed in bright red from head to toe, but from there he had the perfect view of every mug, marshmallow, and delighted face. When the cocoa cart started rolling, he showed quite a bit of restraint for someone who once “fell” into a bowl of snowman marshmallows. We will still keep our eye on him though.
From these various vantage points Tiny Tadhg has watched the season open up. There is something very sweet about how seriously he watches everything. He was delighted when guests used the Wall of Cheers to buy drinks for people they did not know, and he grinned every time a rosy-cheeked whiskey lover checked off a new box on their bingo card. He’s now convinced that we can handle one or two of his “special holiday projects.”
And let me tell you, he has ideas.
Too many ideas.
He has proposed a coloring contest, letters to Santa with a special mailbox, a formal cocoa tasting, an elf led tour of the pub, a handful of reindeer games, and something involving choreographed snowmen with far too much glitter (and I love glitter). Eventually, I had to remind him that I am only one person and that even in December we have to take things one step at a time. After a brief sulk, he agreed that we would start with one thing now and save the rest for later.
So we are beginning with the idea that made his eyes shine the brightest.
✨Tiny Tadhg’s Coloring Contest
Beginning this week, children 10 and under can enter the Tiny Tadhg coloring contest during their visit! Finished pages will be displayed in our Hall of Kells, just beneath the illuminated manuscript images he loves so much. On Christmas Eve, before he returns to the North Pole, Tiny Tadhg will choose one winner from each age group. He is already taking this responsibility very seriously and has asked if he may have “judging snacks.” All children who enter their coloring pages will receive a special little treat from Tiny Tadhg.
With all of that settled, he has turned his attention back to his favorite pastime, and created a new riddle for you! This week’s puzzle is inspired by an Irish tradition.
✨Tiny Tadhg’s Week 2 Riddle:
There are tales of travelers wise,
Who followed a star through winter skies,
But back in Ireland on this same night,
The women claim their own delight.
The kettle sings, the cups clink fast,
The lads mind house and chores at last.
With feet put up and day well-won,
What day is theirs when Christmas is done?
