✨Tiny Tadhg’s final week✨
Tiny Tadhg’s final stretch at Saints & Scholars began the way all good things should: with celebration and gratitude.
Last Monday, at our staff holiday party, I set up a dessert bar, and he appeared beside the sweets almost immediately. It was hard to tell if he was supervising or simply gawking as he carefully surveyed frosting choices and sprinkle distribution. As the night wore on and laughter filled the room, his composure finally broke. By the end of the evening, we found him completely crashed out among the desserts. We didn’t mind, he’s essentially a staff member at this point. And it is the holidays! A small moment of indulgence at the start of a very full week is justified.
The next day, he was back to business.
Tiny Tadhg wasted no time introducing the Letters to Santa kits to the kids, proudly showing off the North Pole mailbox. He has been hovering nearby ever since, waiting rather eagerly for letters to arrive. A few kits are still available, and I’ll be handing out more tonight. He has made it clear he expects more mail. He checks often. Sometimes twice in the same hour.
Midweek, we found him posted up at the back bar, very acrobatically clinging to a bottle of Jameson. This time, he was quietly observing guests as they worked their way through their whiskey bingo cards. He seemed especially pleased watching people discover new favorites and savor what he considers the liquid gold of his home. He has also been reminding me that I owe a few bingo participants their goodie bags, which will be ready for pickup on Friday. I’m beginning to think he’s the one supervising me this year, not the other way around.
Sunday was a lively one.
Tiny Tadhg took it upon himself to oversee the mimosa bar, keeping a watchful eye as glasses were filled and refilled. When the DJ played Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree, I could swear I saw him move, maybe it’s the holiday bustle getting to me. Regardless, he didn’t say anything about it, and neither did I.
Later that evening, during the rush of dinner and cocoa orders, he didn’t miss a beat. I turned around and found him at the helm of the cocoa cart once again, front and center. From there, he watched kids and adults alike light up as mugs were filled. It’s clear now that this is one of his favorite places in the pub. He never seems to tire of it. Plus, he can move around the pub without actually having to move at all!
Yesterday, we finally hung the rest of our coloring contest entries. Both hallways are now lined with them, and they’ll remain up through January 6, the traditional end of the Christmas season, for everyone to enjoy. Before closing, I found Tiny Tadhg standing there quietly, looking down the length of the hallway in amazement. So much talent. So much joy. When I mentioned it’s time to choose a winner, he shook his head. “Let’s wait until Christmas Eve,” he said, “there is still time.” And so there is.
With only a couple days left, we are excited to see what Tiny Tadhg has in store. Now on to his final riddle…
✨Tiny Tadhg’s Week 4 Riddle
I’m spoken when December’s here,
Across the sea with holiday cheer.
Shared when friends and strangers meet,
Or while handing a child a festive treat.
Two Irish words, said joyous and bright,
To wish you well on a winter’s night.
What greeting am I?
